Street Watch: Echo Park Rising

Last year before Echo Park Rising, members of DSA-LA's Street Watch LA initiative watched as LAPD and sanitation displaced unhoused residents of our community, including veterans, to mask the damage of gentrification and sanitize the streets in advance of the festival. In 90 degree heat, we watched as a 60 year old man was denied his jug of water because "his time was up" collecting his belongings. Residents were given just 10 min to put their lives in a 60 gallon garbage bag.

This year, we're calling attention to abusive encampment sweeps in the neighborhood and rallying Echo Park Rising participants to support Services Not Sweeps! Join us for an evening shift on Friday night, meeting at the parking lot behind Stories Cafe off Lemoyne before we head out to Sunset Blvd to hand out flyers and raise awareness around gentrification and the criminalization of the unhoused.
