Pasadena Neighborhood Meeting

Meet with your DSA neighbors! Let's talk socialism and explore opportunities for more localized organizing. Also, at the recommendation of our Political Education committee, we’ll discuss 2 short readings at the meeting. The readings are not required but are encouraged. This month’s topic is electoral politics! Please see below for the readings and a message from DSA-LA’s Political Education committee:

In 2018, the DSA National Political Committee has adopted a detailed electoral strategy, and our own chapter has endorsed our first two candidates: GayleMcLaughlin of the Richmond Progressive Alliance for Lieutenant Governor (running as an independent “No Party Preference”) and Steve Dunwoody for the California State Assembly District 54 (running as a Democrat).

What does it mean to strategically engage in electoral politics to revive the left locally, and nationally? What lessons must be learned from those who came before us to ensure that engagement with electoral institutions advances and mobilizes working class power? Join your comrades to discuss these questions and others, informed by the following readings:

  • Our Road to Power (Vivek Chibber) Emphasizing that political strategy must conform to “the world as we find it,” Chibber reflects on twentieth century socialism and emphasizes the necessity of combining strategic engagement in electoral politics with mass mobilization rooted in working class struggle today.
  • The Two Souls of Democratic Socialism (Kim Moody) This DSA-focused overview explores why the Democratic Party is sometimes characterized as "the graveyard of social movements,” and outlines what can be learned from our predecessors’ engagement with the Democratic Party as we work to advance the “independent organization and self-activity of the working class.”
