Socialism Must Not Be Redefined

Position: Opposed
Statement By: Mason Allport

An DSA endorsement for Bernie Sanders would further cement the public conflation of social democracy with democratic socialism. Sanders's statements, such as his admiration for the Nordic model, as well as his actions, such as aligning with a capitalist party, demonstrate that his views are much more reflective of social democracy than democratic socialism. Programs such as the Green New Deal and Medicare-For-All do improve greatly over current policy, but ultimately preserve the capitalist status quo. Sanders is by far the most qualified Presidential candidate, but in the long term, he has served to confuse the American people as to what socialism actually is. The DSA should distinguish itself from "progressive" Democrats by advocating for a gradual, democratic transition to socialism.
