Las Sandinistas: Film Screening and Filmmaker Discussion

As socialists we must take a critical look at past revolutionary movements to learn from their accomplishments and their failures. In service of carrying out such a task, DSA-LA will be hosting the documentary film screening of ¡Las Sandinistas! Join us and the filmmaker Jenny Murray for a screening of the film and a discussion on the lessons of the Nicaraguan revolution and the legacy of the FSLN. Filmmaker Murray centers the experiences and contributions of the women who fought in the FSLN in the Nicaraguan Revolution. Through interviews with several women who were a part of the movement and the use of archival footage, Murray gives an intimate look into the social revolution brought about by the struggle while also highlighting the patriarchal constructs faced by the female fighters within their own ranks. Since being swept out of office in 1990 and subsequently returning to power in 2006, the FSLN has become a force of repression in the country with Daniel Ortega as their leader.
¡Las Sandinistas! reveals the untold stories of Nicaraguan women warriors and social revolutionaries who shattered barriers to lead combat and social reform during Nicaragua’s 1979 Sandinista Revolution, the ensuing US-backed Contra War, and documents their leadership in the continuing struggle for justice today. The film reveals a magical moment in world history when thousands of female rebel fighters transformed society’s definition of womanhood and leadership. Nicaraguan women from every social class fought on the front lines on an unprecedented scale in the Sandinista rebel army, and after the defeat of the brutal Somoza dictatorship, these same women pioneered groundbreaking nationwide medical, social, and education programs. Today, as the current Sandinista government is erasing these women's stories of heroism, social reform, and military accomplishments from history books, these same women are fighting to reclaim history - and are once again leading inspiring popular movements for equality and democracy.
