PASSED 5/19/20: Motion for IJC to endorse the proposal to create a San Gabriel Valley/Eastside branch of the Los Angeles DSA Chapter:
Whereas, the Los Angeles area is vast and more DSA members who live the SGV and Eastside would be able to participate in branch meetings if they took place on the Eastside;
Whereas areas such as Boyle Heights, East LA, City Terrace, Alhambra, Monterey Park, and more have their own rich working class history of struggles, including immigrant rights struggles, and present unique opportunities to organize;
Whereas new and long term members of DSA-LA who grew up in and live, work and go to school in the SGV are eager to lead and build a branch there and further develop DSA's grassroots work deep in these communities;
Whereas a new branch organizing in the distinctive and large immigrant communities on the eastside would be a tremendous step forward in DSA's work with and for immigrants;
Whereas the IJC already unites members of the Central, SFV and Westside branches in our work, including in successful campaigns at the LA City Council, and therefore we know an additional branch would help, not impair those campaigns;
And whereas the establishment of this branch is consistent with Organizing For All;
The Immigration Justice Committee endorses the motion to establish the SGV/Eastside Branch and urges all members to vote for it this week.
