Two analyses, one questionnaire, a candidate Q&A, and 10 days of voting later, we're excited to announce the chapter is getting behind two major statewide campaigns this year and endorsing leftist candidate for Lt. Governor, Gayle McLaughlin, and the Affordable Housing Act, a ballot measure aimed at repealing the Costa-Hawkins Rental Act.
These are clearly campaigns that resonate with our membership, with the highest voter turnout we've seen for a non-election. Check out the breakdowns below:
1. Should DSA-LA endorse Gayle McLaughlin for Lt. Governor?
Yes - 94%
No - 6%
2. Should DSA-LA endorse the Affordable Housing Act to repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Act?
Yes - 99%
No - 1%
The results come after a unanimous endorsement of McLaughlin from the Electoral Politics committee, who wrote in a statement: "Gayle McLaughlin isn’t just good for California, she’s good for DSA-LA. Her platform priorities (which you can find in her candidate questionnaire) read like a DSA-LA wishlist, and we stand to directly benefit from her commitment to using her campaign and office as a vehicle for building independent local power."
Likewise, the Housing & Homelessness committee has enthusiastically endorsed Costa-Hawkins repeal and noted how "a high-profile statewide battle with the real estate industry would be a huge opportunity to put bold solutions to our housing crisis front-and-center.
"DSA can serve as the left flank of this campaign, continuously arguing that a repeal of Costa-Hawkins repeal is necessary but not sufficient. We have seen how quickly single-payer healthcare has become the common-sense policy for left-of-center politics — let’s try to do the same regarding policies like rent control and public housing construction."
