Day in and day out, our neighbors at the Echo Park Lake deal with harassment from Park Rangers, LAPD, and housed residents who don't want to look at poverty in their neighborhood. Actions have escalated recently, with the City raiding the camp on Tuesday and arresting leaders for minor charges, like smoking in public, while gentrifiers visiting the park do the same thing every day. Together, we must stand up for the rights of our neighbors to stay at the park, where they've built a supportive community and they have access to toilets and other necessary hygiene services. People have a right to rest in public space, especially when there is no housing or shelter currently available in the area.
Even though there is NO TRASH at the Echo Park camp, the City is resuming their weekly sweeps on Friday to try and make life as uncomfortable as possible for the residents in order to pressure them to leave.
Join us to defend our neighbors, stand up and say: Echo Park is OUR park, and it belongs to the people who need it!
