Caitlin Parker, Damien Goodmon, and David Goldblatt will be presenting "The Olympics and Homelessness: How The State of Exception Spurs Displacement and Tools for the Left to Fight Back." This will be a discussion about the overwhelming historical precedence for increase and deepening of homelessness and housing insecure populations during the Olympics over the past 100+ years. We’ll also talk about how the 1984 Olympics and homelessness crisis resembles the current homeless explosion and the similarly fraught tactics and “solutions” being employed by politicians in 2017. Finally, we’ll look forward to how the 2028 Olympics and other mega projects like the Amazon bid will make all of our issues worse and how we might – on the left – fight back.
